Hello,
There are two different usb host controllers from what everything tells me. I tried drivers from MSI's page for the motherboard (Z170a PC. NEC PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller Driver. Jul 31, 2017 - If you need to update Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller drivers for Windows 10, 2 ways here to download the right driver. I've been having troubles with my moderately decent system, but there was something holding me back. It just greatly reduced my input lag.
I have been dealing with an issue for the past several days. I will give a brief summary of how I got to this point and then provide details on the current situation.
A few nights ago, my PC froze while playing a game (not a particularly taxing, graphics heavy affair) and my computer would not shutdown. I ended up having to manually shut it down by holding down the power button. When I turned it back on the next day, I discovered that none of my USB devices were working. I attempted to uninstall and reinstall drivers, to no avail, discovered that my PC would never actually fully restart or shutdown at this point, requiring a manual shutdown each time. I went on Microsoft Support and did the chat thing, they walked me through uninstalling the drivers in Device Manager, etc., restarting, it didn't help. Then I attempted to do a clean install of Windows 10, which didn't take because of the restart/shutdown issue and I could no longer get back into Windows. I then did a full clean reinstall using my USB flash drive that I initially had for setting up. This helped me discover that the USB 3.1 port is still functional, while none others are.
So, here I am, with a clean install and still having the same problems, with the only new discovery being that the USB 3.1 port works, while the USB 3.0 ports and all other USB ports do not.
Here is a brief summary of what I know:
When I look in the Device Manager, I see the following under Universal Serial Bus controllers:
ASMedia USB Root Hub
AS Media USB3.1 eXtensible Host Controller (has the latest drivers from the ASUS website)
USB Composite Device
USB xHCI Compliant Host Controller (has the yellow alert tag, states Code 10 This device cannot start).
I have uninstalled, disabled, reinstalled, etc. the USB xHCI Compliant Host Controller drivers since the fresh install with no change.
The PC still will not complete a restart or shutdown on its own. I have put the PC in Safe Mode, done Diagnostic Mode startup, etc., but no matter what, it will never fully restart or shutdown.
I'm not sure if the restart/shutdown issue and the USB issue are directly linked, but they did begin at the exact same time.
Again, uninstalling the drivers in Device Manager has not helped and I do not see any clear fix for the Compliant Host Controller. I've tried everything I can think of, hoping someone can point me in the direction of getting this thing fixed.
I built the PC in September and had no issues up until this point. I have my mouse plugged into the 3.1 port and snagged a PS/2 keyboard so I can use the device for now. Want to get my USB keyboard, external HDD, etc. all connected and running, though.
